- Foundation year
In Italy, a Foundation year (also known as “Anno propedeutico”) is a preparatory year designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the subjects required for their chosen field of study to successfully enter a University degree program in Italy.
Depending on the specific discipline they intend to pursue at the University, the curriculum may include subjects such as mathematics, sciences, language studies, etc.
Who is the Foundation year for?
Foundation years are often beneficial for students who may not meet the direct entry requirements for a particular degree program or for those who have completed their secondary education in a curriculum that doesn’t align perfectly with the Italian University system.
Moreover, as one of the general requirements to apply to an Italian University is to have a total of 12 years of education, the foundation year is mandatory for aspirant students coming from those countries where education only lasts 11 years (e.g. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile etc.).
Where can you take a Foundation year?
Many universities and educational institutions offer these preparatory programs – make sure to confirm whether the Foundation year is recognized by the university where you plan to continue your studies afterward. Here are some institutions that offer Foundation programs:
-
- LUISS Guido Carli (Rome)
- University of Pavia (Pavia)
- University of Parma (Parma)
- Accademia del Lusso (Milan)
- University of Pisa(Pisa)
- Università per stranieri di Siena (Siena)
- La Sapienza University (Rome)
